Gemini Health Care Group is proud to announce the Fourth Annual Fundraiser Gala to be held at the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington, Virginia on Saturday, September 24th, 2011 between 7:00PM and 12:00AM. We have worked hard to put together an evening of networking, dinner, and entertainment. This year’s event theme is:

Bridging the Health Care Gap through Partnerships

The key note speaker at this year’s event is Dr. Aziza Shad who is the Amey Distinguished Professor of Neuro-Oncology and Childhood Cancer as well as Director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Our musical guests include the renowned Ethiopian, songstress Hiruth Girma, accompanied by Alemayhu Makonnen and his band.

We are also delighted to honor outstanding individuals who have made tremendous contributions in the areas of education, research, public health and community service nationally and internationally. The honorees for 2011 include:

  • Dr. Aklilu Lemma (posthumously), was the former Dean of the Faculty of Science and Director of the Institute of Pathobiology at the Haile Selassie I University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. His pioneering research produced a cheap and locally available intervention that helped combat a parasitic disease called Schistosomiasis or Bilharzia.
  • Dr. Ahmed Moen an Associate Professor and Chairman of the Allied Health Education and Health Management Sciences of the Division of Allied Health Sciences, as well as Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Howard University College of Medicine and Senior Associate for Research, Department of International Health in Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University.
  • Dr. Tsehaye Teferra founder and president of the Ethiopian Community Development Council, Inc. (ECDC), which was established in 1983 to serve a growing Ethiopian refugee community and assist other refugees and immigrants to settle in America.
  • Mary Cohen, Esq., a partner with Phillips & Cohen, LLP, and one of the champions of establishing a pediatric oncology treatment, educational and research center in Ethiopia.

Thanks to your support and financial contribution, Gemini had another successful year. In March 2011, we took a medical mission trip to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia consisting of medical and surgical teams. Sub-specialists in pediatric ENT, urology, ophthalmology, audiology, neurology, pulmonology, endocrinology, dermatology and emergency medicine performed services at three local hospitals, as well as, Mekanisa School for the deaf. The medical team also conducted a two day Continuing Medical Education (CME) attended by nearly 120 pediatricians and pediatric residents and medical staff.

While we take a moment to reflect on the past year’s accomplishments, as well as, thank our supporters, our medical mission to Ethiopia continues. There is yet so much more to be done to continue making a difference in the lives of the children of Ethiopia. That is exactly why another ten-member strong medical/surgical team is slated to travel to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the end of October, 2011 - in collaboration with our partner, Healing The Children - Greater Philadelphia Chapter.

Please join us in honoring our volunteers, thank our supporters and expand our effort to change more lives.
