Gemini Healthcare Group: Climbing New Heights in 2010

Medical Mission

In partnership with Healing the Children, Greater Philadelphia Chapter (HTC)  

  • October 2009: a five-person strong health care professional team conducted a needs assessment and medical education program at Black Lion Hospital, Cure International Hospital, and Yekatit 12 Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
  • March 2010: a 25 person strong health care team—including  pediatric ear, nose and throat (ENT), pediatric anesthesia,  and pediatric urology physicians, nurses, nurse anesthetists,  an audiologist, and a biomedical engineer—stayed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for about one week.  Together, they provided teaching, consultations/assessments and surgical services at Black Lion Hospital, Yekatit 12 Hospital, and Cure International Hospital as well hearing assessments at Mekanissa School for the Deaf in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Supporting Medical Education

In partnership with HTC:

  • Pediatric, ENT and surgical resident education at Black Lion Hospital.
  • Hands on teaching of ENT residents at Cure International Hospital.
  • Lectures to nurse anesthetists at Black Lion and Yekatit 12 Hospital.

Donations

In partnership with HTC:

  • Transported donated medical equipment, surgical equipment, and supplies to Black Lion and Cure Hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia as well as Sister Aklesia Hospital in Nazareth, Ethiopia.
  • Founded the first play and teaching room for pediatric inpatients at Black Lion Hospital.
  • Donated an audiometer to the Mekanissa School for the Deaf.
  • Donated 40 boxes of pediatric medical journals to pediatric residents at Black Lion Hospital
  • Donated computers, purchased furniture as well as other fixtures for the pediatric resident’s library at Black Lion Hospital.

Hospital Project

  • Completed architectural design and environmental studies for the children’s hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
  • In collaboration with MBA students at Ohio State University, completed our business plan.
  • Tentatively scheduled to commence construction in November, 2010.

Future Projects- 2010-2011

  • Continue medical missions to Ethiopia, at least twice a year.
  • Finalize a relationship agreement with a children’s hospital in the U.S to help us achieve our mission.
  • Facilitate the installation and implementation of pediatric medicine software to hospitals in Ethiopia.  Collaborate with a leading pediatric software developer.
  • Complete the needs assessment for the creation of a Center for Children with Special Needs.
  • Implementation of the Pediatric Mobile Clinic.

Affordable Health Care Services

Building a hospital, especially in a country where the resources are limited, is no easy task. It requires patience, devotion, and generous help from the community at large.
